When you walk into a restaurant claiming to serve “Authentic Kerala cuisine” and see tons of happily chattering and hogging Malayalis filling up the restaurant, you know you’ve come to the right place.I went in, and after some delay was placed at a table, and after some more delay, handed a menu with apologies (Sunday service very busy madam). No problem, if your food is good, I can overlook some discrepancies in service, as long as you’re not outright inefficient or rude. I ordered a fish curry meal (Rs 100), and settled down to watching a couple of really cute kids playfully fighting in the big Mallu family seated opposite my table.
The food came, simple fare- boiled rice, aviyal and payasam, along with the star, fish curry. And now I’m going to go into raptures over the fish. Because the rest of it was pretty standard fare, nice sambar and moru curry, coconut everywhere you looked. But the fish. Soft, delectable mackerel in a coconut curry. The mackerel would just melt in your mouth, and the coconut curry gave it a nice flavor but did not mask the natural taste of the fish. The mackerel was fresh, absolutely non-fishy in taste, and I guarantee you, even if you don’t really fancy fish, you will like this fish.
Service during crunch time may be a little spotty; I was lucky to be sitting next to a huge family so just latched on to the servers when they came to serve them. But you get good fish here. Just ask the Mallus. And this solitary Bong.
